An interesting topic, looking at the risks surrounding prolonged exposure to silicosis, was discussed last week on Radio 2. Silicosis is a form of occupational lung disease caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica dust.  Those who are particularly at risk of the disease are people who have worked in construction/demolition, stone masonry, the manufacturing and fitting of worktops, those involved in pottery and ceramics, mining and sand blasting. The HSE have stated that silica dust is the “single biggest risk to construction workers”, and potentially the new asbestos.

Silicosis usually takes years to develop, not too dissimilar to asbestos conditions, and the main symptoms of this condition are:

  • a persistent cough,
  • shortness of breath,
  • weakness and tiredness

and can also increase the risk of developing other, more serious and potentially life threatening conditions.
